Light Edition Overview
IMSXpress Light Edition software can
be installaed on only one computer (it is not a network software). One installation
file installs the application and the database together on a local computer. The
application and the database are integrated and cannot be separated.
Standard and Professional Editions Overview
IMSXpress Standard and Professional Edition is a network software and has two separate components:
- Client Application
- Database
The IMSXpress client application can be either a Windows Client Application that installs
directly on user computers, or a Server Client Application that installs
on a Windows server and then is distributed to users by Remote Desktop Services as a Remote Application (fromerly Terminal Server).
The database can be either MS SQL database or a File-type database (Vista DB). The SQL
database can be installed on any MS SQL Server and be accessed by the IMSXpress
application over any type of network (LAN, WAN, VPN, Cloud Servers, etc.) The File-type
database is usually installed in a shared folder or a network drive on a local
network (LAN).
Installation Configuration 1: Client Computers and Hosted SQL Database
Applies to Subscription Software and to SQL Standard/Professional edition software
with database hosting service.
Install the client IMSXpress application directly on user Windows computers (Mac computer must run a Windows
emulator, like Parallels, for example).
When IMSXpress starts for the first time it will ask you for the database connection
key that you will enter at this time.
This setup is the easiest to install. You just double-click the client installation
file, and then enter the database connection key. You will be able to connect to
your database from anywhere over a secure (encrypted) internet connection. Note
that this setup requires that you either subscribe to the IMSXpress software or
purchase from us an additional database hosting service.
Installation Configuration 2: Client Computers and File-type Database
Applies to Standard/Professional edition software.
Install the client IMSXpress application directly on user Windows computers (Mac computer must run a Windows
emulator, like Parallels, for example).
The database files (VistaDB) are placed in a shared folder or a network drive that
is visible to all computers running IMSXpress. The shared folder is usually set
up on a server, but it can be on any computer that is accessible over the local
network. When IMSXpress starts for the first time it pops up a connection wizard
to connect the application to the shared database folder.
This setup is very easy to install. It does not require any IT skills and the installation
can be done by anyone. This setup can only be installed on a local network (LAN).
It cannot be accessed remotely over an internet based network, such as VPN, cloud
data storage, or DropBox (DropBox will corrupt the database).
Installation Configuration 3: Client Computers and SQL Database
Applies to SQL Standard/Professional edition software.
Install the client IMSXpress application directly on user Windows computers (Mac computer must run a Windows
emulator, like Parallels, for example).
Install the SQL database on any MS SQL Server version 2005 or higher and any edition,
including the free SQL Express editions. The SQL server can be local, remote, or
a cloud server (like SQL Azure, for example). When IMSXpress starts for the first
time it pops up a connection wizard to connect the application to the SQL server.
This setup is easy to install on user computers but requires some IT expertise to
install and set up the MS SQL Server. It is possible to configure this setup for
remote access from anywhere.
Installation Configuration 4: Server Remote Desktop Services and SQL or Flat-file Database
Applies to SQL Standard/Professional edition software.
Install the Server Client IMSXpress on any Windows Server OS. The best way make
server installed IMSXpress available to users is by Remote Desktop Services (formerly
Terminal Services) with RempteApps, or by using other software products such as
Citrix/XenApp.
Install the SQL or File-type database as outlined above.
The added advantage of server installation is that it enables users to access IMSXpress
from any computer, tablet, ipad and most phones (Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, or Android
operating systems).
This setup requires some IT expertise to install. It is possible to configure this
setup for remote access from anywhere. Please note that this setup requires special
licenses from Microsoft (RDS CALs).
